Pretentious LA Cokeheads? Maybe – that’s the caricature they like to tease. Noah Dillon and Chandler Ransom Lucy make up the “only important band in the world”; both with their layered artistic history and experience. Together, with a distinguished skeletal silhouette, they’ve been pushing an industrial-electrocrash-rock inspired sound for over a decade. Though not intentional, in the current revival of skinny jeans, Hedi slimane inspriation, and the culture’s body-image hangovers — they’re central. not a trend piece, a mirror. their catalog backs it up: “SSX,” “The Feel,” “Go Somewhere,” “Colorado,” “Stunn,” and the Enemy era read less like aesthetics and more like life.
Despite the increasing monsoon of shirtless, slimy frat guys, the Hellp put on a performance of pure ecstasy and neurotic energy. Remixing their own hits to add even more depth to their hundred layers of synth, a special Blink-182 cover, and an unreleased single proved their dedication to their art.
More than noise, but not quite music.
