Artist: Yung Lean

Venue: House of Blues, MA

Yung Lean is a Swedish artist whose influence on underground and internet-era hip hop is difficult to overstate. Emerging in the early 2010s, Lean became one of the first artists to fully embody the emotional detachment, irony, and surreal digital aesthetics that would go on to define a generation of online music communities. As a founding figure of the Sad Boys collective alongside collaborators like Bladee, Lean helped blur the lines between cloud rap, experimental hip hop, and internet culture, creating a sound that felt both deeply melancholic and strangely distant. His music rejected traditional rap in favor of vulnerability, atmosphere, and dreamlike repetition, laying groundwork for countless artists who followed. Over time, Lean’s work evolved from lo-fi SoundCloud releases into a more refined and emotionally complex catalog, while still maintaining his cult status within the underground.

The show was energetic from the moment Yung Lean took the stage. Opening with some of his most recognizable hits, such as Smirnoff Ice, the crowd immediately surged with excitement. The set was divided into three distinct acts, giving the performance a sense of structure almost like a play. The progression through these acts made the show a one of a kind experience, rather than feeling like a standard run-through of songs. A live band played a major role in reshaping Lean’s live performance, adding a heavier and more dynamic feel to tracks that are often minimal and atmospheric in their studio versions.
